Comparison of Frame-based and Bone-based Animation Types

In this introductory Lecture, we will first discuss spritesheets and we will try to answer questions like:

  • Why do we need spritesheets as game developers?
  • What are the benefits that spritesheets can offer compared to just having a bunch of images in your project?

We will compare two main approaches to animating 2D characters that are used in all 2D games: frame-based and bone-based approaches. We will talk about their pros and cons. I will provide some examples of well-known video games where each of these animation styles are used.
