This is no easy feat. Expert practitioners in this space have run thousands of tests to determine how people react to the various arrangements of copy and design.

This course brings together the tools and techniques I've learned in working with high-growth startups as well as insights learned from some of the foremost experts who I've been lucky enough to get to know.

What is user onboarding?

User onboarding is a mix of selling, educating and using your product. It's about getting a new user to understand your product's value now, instead of later.

Onboarding can also also be useful to help understand what motivates or prevents someone from becoming active or making a purchase.

Who is this course made for?

Anyone interested in learning the modern techniques high-growth startups are leveraging to accelerate their growth. This includes entrepreneurs, UX designers, product managers, marketers and analysts.

What doe the course cover?

In this course, I'll take you some best and worse practices – an explanation Tim O'Reilly from O'Reilly Media has called a "great presentation."

I then walk you through how other leading products out there "activate" their users including Facebook, Twitter and Venmo.

Next, and because I've found the best way to learn about great onboarding is from other products, I bring in step-by-step screenshots from over 60 of the top onboarding flows out there.

This database of screenshots is the largest collection of first experience web flows available and spans from products in SaaS, User Generated Content, Marketplace, and Ecommerce.

In each flow, we start from the homepage and go all the way to that first "must-have experience." Where possible, I also include that initial onboarding email to give you a holistic sense of that product's first user experience.

You might be thinking, "great, but can't I get all of this information by signing up for each of these?" Yes! And for some you should – they’re great products.

However even if you’re experienced in product and growth, access to all these flows – which have painstakingly taken over 100 hours to find, sign up for, label, screenshot and save appropriately (not to mention all of the accounts you’d need to confirm and potentially unsubscribe from) I'm told is WELL worth it.

February 2014 Update: My hope is to make this product a living, breathing community focused on activating new users. Since initially developing this course, we've added over 20 new flows based on demand.

The next step will be adding new best practices lectures as well as a discussion component for each onboarding flows which I will kick off. I'll be bringing in outside experts to do the same.
